Specimens should be delivered to the microbiology laboratory as soon as possible. Culture of specimens older than 24 hours may lead to a reduction in recovery of microorganisms. Do not freeze specimens at -20°C, or in a frost-free freezer.
Specimens should be collected in sterile leakproof containers without preservatives. Moisten small pieces of tissue with several drops of sterile, non-bacteriostatic normal saline. Swab-collected specimens and fecal specimens are not recommended. One swab in Amies or Stuarts transport medium may be submitted from oral or urogenital sources: swabs from other sites are not recommended. Note: Swab specimens submitted
for fungal culture will not include fungal smear direct exam.
Swabs:
- ESwab: one swab can be collected for Gram stain, aerobic, anaerobic and fungal cultures.
- Other Amies medium swab types: collect one swab for every culture and stain to be ordered.
