Note: Lithium Heparin Microtainer (NICU Only, Volume = 0.4 mL)
Collection Processing Instructions

Indicate source on specimen and order.  Fill tube and mix by inverting several times.

Cleanse the drawing site the same as collecting for a blood culture. 

Smaller volumes of specimen reduce the chances or recovering organisms, especially in adults.

Short draws should be processed immediately

For most yeast, routine blood cultures are sufficient.

For cases of suspected filamentous fungus (i.e. Aspergillus, Histoplasma, Blastomyces, Coccidiodes), collect specimen in SPS tube.

***All requests must be reviewed before further processing the request.

Notify, in this order: 1. Dr. Sophie Arbefeville, 2. Dr. Taylor Wahlig, 3. The pathologist on call.

​The person notified will consult with the ordering provider, then notify the specimen processor whether to proceed with the request.***
