This test is useful for the direct detection and differentiation of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal colonization. If only MRSA is being sought, refer to test code ‘MRSAD’ – MRSA Detection PCR.
Specimens should be delivered to the microbiology laboratory as soon as possible.
Swabs:
Nasal or Nares
Swab
Sources other than nasal
Specimens older than 5 days
Specimens with excessive blood or mucus on swabs
Swabs that are cut or broken off in transport tube
The performance characteristics of this test have not been established in patients ≤ 21 years of age.
