Useful For

​Intended to aid in the diagnosis of vaginal infections in females (14 years old or older) with a clinical representation consistent with bacterial vaginosis, vulvovaginal candidiasis or trichomoniasis.​

Collection Processing Instructions

Specimen Transport/Preparation

    1. Open the outer peel pack, identify the larger cleaning swab, and discard it.
    2. Open the package that contains the pink capped Xpert Swab Transport Reagent tube and individually wrapped collection swab.
    3. Set aside before beginning to collect sample.
    4. Open the collection swab wrapper by peeling open the top of the wrapper.
    5. Remove the swab, taking care to not touch the tip or lay down. If the soft tip is touch, swab is laid down or dropped, discard, and request another collection kit.
    6. Hold the swab in your hand, placing thumb and forefinger in the middle of the swab shaft across the scoreline.
    7. Carefully insert swab into the vagina about 2 inches past the introitus and gently rotate swab for 10-30 seconds. Make sure the swab touch vaginal walls so that the moisture is absorbed by swab.
    8. Withdraw swab without touching skin.
    9. While holding swab in hand, unscrew pink tube cap. Do not spill contents. If tube contents are spilled, discard, and replace with new Xpert Swab collection kit.
    10. Immediately place swab into transport tube so the score line is at the top of tube. Align the score line with the top edge of tube and carefully break shaft.
    11. Discard top portion of shaft.
    12. Tightly screw cap onto tube
    13. Invert or gently shake the tube 3-4X to elute material from swab. Avoid foaming.
    14. Label tube with patient label and send to lab.

Test Information

The test utilizes real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the amplification of specific DNA targets and utilizes fluorogenic target-specific hybridization probes to detect and differentiate DNA from: 

  • Bacterial vaginosis markers (Individual markers not reported)
    •  Atopobium spp.
    • Bacterial Vaginosis Associated Bacteria-2 (BVAB-2)
    • Megasphaera-1         
  • Candida spp. (C. albicans, C. tropicalis, C. parapsilosis, C. dubliniensis)
  • Candida glabrata/Candida krusei
  • Trichomonas vaginalis
