This test is used as an aid in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure.
Specimens that contain biotin at a concentraion of 250 ng/mL demonstrate a less than or equal to 10% change in results. Biotin concentrations greater than this may lead to falsely depressed results for patient samples. Results from patients taking biotin supplements or receiving high-dose biotin therapy should be interpreted with caution due to the possible interference with this test.
CHF Unlikely IF:
Age <50 and NT-proBNP <450
Age 50-75 and NT-proBNP <900
Age >75 and NT-proBNP <1800
Pride CHF Score <7
CHF Very likely IF NT-proBNP >10,000 Regardless of age
NT-proBNP should be used as a rule out test for CHF.
*Biotin interference may cause inaccurate results*
