Useful For

​Measurements of lactic acid are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of lactic acidosis (abnormally high acidity of the blood).

This test code is specifically for Sepsis Protocol patient testing of venous lactates.  It will order both a baseline venous lactate (LACV0H) and a 3 hour post baseline venous lactate (LACV3H).

Collection Processing Instructions
​Note: Test is only orderable at Marshfield Medical Center hospital based laboratories.
 
Collect Gray Top Tube and transport to lab promptly after collection.  Centrifuge and remove plasma from the cells within 60 minutes.  Specimen must be drawn WITHOUT a tourniquet and WITHOUT hand clenching.
 
If the baseline LACV0H is <=2.0 mmoL/L, the LACV3H is discontinued. 
If the LACV0H is >=2.1, then the LACV3H is collected and reported.
