Uric acid measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions, and of patients receiving cytotoxic drugs.​
Specimen Requirements

Collection Processing Instructions
Samples collected in RTT or GTT must be removed from the cells within one hour for storage or transport. Samples collected in gel barrier tubes must be removed from the primary tube prior to transporting to Marshfield. Do not send the primary collection tube.
 
Samples from chemotherapy patients receiving the uric acid lowering drug Rasburicase (Elitek) require special handling to avoid falsely low results.  Use prechilled Light Green PST tube, and hand-carry to lab in ice-water bath.  Centrifuge, remove plasma, and assay immediately.​

Test Information
N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (metabolite of Acetaminophen) will generate erroneously low results in samples for patients that have taken toxic doses of acetaminophen.
