Collection Processing Instructions

Hair, skin and nails should be submitted in a sterile, leak-proof container without preservatives.

Respiratory secretions, tissues, fluids, or feces should be submitted in a sterile, leak-proof container without preservatives. Tissue specimens may require a small amount of sterile, non-bacteriostatic saline to prevent drying.

Swab specimens are acceptable but are discouraged as they are not optimal for fungal culture, and their use may result in reduced recovery of fungi. However, if yeasts are the primary consideration, an ESwab, or a swab in other Amies transport medium is acceptable.

Swabs:

  • ESwab™: collect one swab for Gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic cultures, and an additional swab for each additional culture type or stain (e.g. fungus or mycobacteria).
  • Other Amies medium swab types: collect one swab for every culture and stain (including Gram) to be ordered.

See eSwab collection video for more information.

Blood or Bone Marrow: See Blood Culture, Fungal.
