Test Category
Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type Preferred Container/Tube Acceptable Container/Tube Specimen Volume Specimen Minimum Volume
(allows for 1 repeat)
Fluid EDTA Lavender Top Tube (LTT)/2 unfixed air-dried slides Red Top Tube (RTT) 1.0 ml 0.5 ml
Collection Processing Instructions

Thoracic fluid, abdominal fluid, synovial/joint fluid and pericardial fluid may be submitted for fluid analysis cytology.

A lavender top (EDTA) tube is preferred for submission of fluid specimens.  A red top tube or a screw top tube is acceptable, however there is a greater risk of a non-diagnostic specimen due to cellular degeneration.  Submit air-dried, freshly made, direct and/or sediment smears with the fluid specimen.

Indicate fluid type on requisition.

Label container, tube and slides with animal's name and source.

Note: Do not package cytology slides with formalin specimens. Formalin vapors will adversely affect cellular components of cytology smears.
