Collection Processing Instructions

Air dried smears from fine needle aspiration of lesions and fluid samples aspirated from cystic lesions or masses may be submitted for routine cytology. Body fluid samples (abdominal/thoracic fluid) may also be submitted; however cell counts will not be formed (see Fluid Analysis Cytology). Submitted slides may be unstained or stained with Dif Quik-type stains. 

Note: Do not package cytology slides with formalin specimens. Formalin vapors will adversely affect cellular components of cytology smears.

Write name and source on specimens.

Test Information
A charge will be assessed for each anatomic site sampled.
1-4 slides can be submitted for each source – any slide(s) beyond 4 results in an additional charge per slide.
Examples of Sources:
Slides from multiple lymph nodes are considered one source (1-10 slides), beyond this will result in an additional charge per slide.
Joints are considered one source.
