Collection Processing Instructions

Fluids, aspirates, or feces should be collected in a sterile, leak-proof container without preservative. Tissue specimens should be submitted in a sterile container with a small amount of non-bacteriostatic saline. Swab collected specimens are inadequate and highly discouraged, aspirates and tissues are preferred.

One air-dried, labelled smear.

Swabs:

  • ESwab: collect one swab for Gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic cultures, and an additional swab for each additional culture type or stain (e.g. fungus or mycobacteria).
  • Other Amies medium swab types: collect one swab for every culture and stain to be ordered.
