Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type Preferred Container/Tube Acceptable Container/Tube Specimen Volume Specimen Minimum Volume
(allows for 1 repeat)
Whole Blood EDTA Lavender Top Tube (LTT) 2.0 mL 1.0 mL
Blood Smear Glass slide
Plasma Citrated Blue Top Tube (BTT) 1.0 mL 0.5 mL
Collection Processing Instructions

Draw blood into EDTA vacuum tube. Invert sample gently 5-6 times to facilitate mixing and prevent coagulation.  Refrigerate tube(s).

Prepare 1-2 peripheral blood smears.  Store/ship blood slides at room temperature.

Label tube and smears with animal’s name

Citrate (BTT) tubes must be filled to the capacity indicated on the tube for accurate analysis.  Centrifuge Blue Top Tube and remove plasma. Transfer plasma to a clear plastic transfer tube, freeze within 1 hour of collection

Specimen Stability Information
Specimen Type Temperature Time
Whole Blood Room Temperature 2 days
Whole Blood Refrigerate 2 days
Plasma Frozen 1 year
Slides Room Temperature Indefinitely
Rejection Criteria
Frozen Lavender Top Tube
Clotted Specimen
Gross hemolysis
Frozen Unspun Blue Top Tube
Clotted Specimen
Insuffciently Filled Draw Tube
Specimen Contaminated With IV Fluids
Interference
The blood to anticoagulant ratio is critical for accurate test results. If an inadequate blood sample is obtained, coagulation results will be falsely prolonged.
Plasma specimen should be analyzed within 72 hours of collection.
Platelet counts are given only if the platelet result from the analyzer is valid. If result is not valid, an estimated platelet range is given. If an actual platelet count is needed, the platelet count will need to be ordered in addition to the CBC.
