Test Category
Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type Preferred Container/Tube Acceptable Container/Tube Specimen Volume Specimen Minimum Volume
(allows for 1 repeat)
Urine, Random Pre-weighed 0.01 g sulfamic acid aliquot tube Any sterile plastic tube or sage cup 5.0 mL 3.0 mL
Collection Processing Instructions
Collect urine in a clean container and pour into pre-weighed 0.01 gram sulfamic acid aliquot tube provided by Marshfield Lab. Acceptable alternative preservative is to add a few granules of sulfamic acid or acidify with dilute hydrochloric acid to a pH <5. Acid preservative needs to be added within 24 hours of collection. If preservative is not available, samples can be sent unpreserved and refrigerated if arrival in lab is less than 24 hours from collection time. If time from collection to lab arrival is greater than 24 hours, it is acceptable to immediately freeze unpreserved samples and transport frozen. Unpreserved samples will be acidified upon arrival in lab.

* For feline species, a control sample is not required to be sent with patient sample.

* For all other species, a patient control sample should be submitted for this test and also preserved. CLEARLY identify the tubes as "Control" and "Patient". If no control sample is available, Write "No Control Sent" on the lab requisition form.
