​Any ​Sterile, leak-proof container without preservative ESwab™, or other Amies medium based swab ​Corneal scrapings, ophthalmic tissue (0.5 g), or aspirates (0.5 mL), or 1 swab
Collection Processing Instructions

Tissue, fluid, or one swab. Small pieces of tissue should be moistened with a small amount of sterile, non-bacteriostatic saline. ESwabs should arrive within 4 days of collection for optimal recovery of microbes.

Swabs:

  • ESwab: collect one swab for Gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic cultures, and an additional swab for each additional culture type or stain (e.g. fungus or mycobacteria).
  • Other Amies medium swab types: collect one swab for every culture and stain (including Gram) to be ordered.

Test Information

While this test is similar to the standard aerobic culture and susceptibility in terms of microbial isolation and identification, a panel of antimicrobials that are more appropriate for ophthalmic infections is used when susceptibility testing is indicated.

Up to two susceptibilities will be performed as part of the culture. Each additional susceptibility required will be individually charged.
