Collection Processing Instructions

Tissue or aspirate from under the scab/lesion preferred. Tissue should be submitted in a sterile, leak-proof container without preservative. Tissue specimens may require a small amount of sterile, non-bacteriostatic saline to prevent drying. ESwabs should arrive in the lab within 4 days of collection for optimal recovery of microbes.

Swabs:

  • ESwab: collect one swab for Gram stain, aerobic and anaerobic cultures, and an additional swab for each additional culture type or stain (e.g. fungus or mycobacteria).
  • Other Amies medium swab types: collect one swab for every culture and stain (including Gram) to be ordered.

Test Information

Up to two susceptibilities will be performed as part of the culture. Each additional susceptibility required will be individually charged. Routine susceptibilities are performed by the micro broth dilution method. MICs will be provided with each susceptibility. Organisms of specific interest for this culture workup include: Staphylococcus aureus, S. intermedius Group, S. schleiferi, Beta hemolytic Streptococcus species, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
