IS THIS A DERMAL (OR VAGINAL) SOURCE? Please order HS12PCR for suspected herpes simplex virus, VZVPCR for suspected varicella zoster virus, or HSVZVP for both. NRESVSO can be ordered for dermal specimens for hand-foot-and-mouth disease or enterovirus. Clearly indicate "enterovirus" on request. For cytomegalovirus (CMV), indicate "cytomegalovirus" on the request.
Submit ONE of the following specimens: 1) Body (Pericardial, peritoneal, amniotic) or Spinal fluid: 1 ml in sterile container 2) Rectal: Dacron-tipped swab with plastic handle in M6 viral transport media. 3) Stool: 5-10 grams in sterile container. 4) Tissue: NOT SKIN - (Brain, colon, kidney, liver, etc): Minimum 5mm tissue in a sterile container with 1 to 2 mL of sterile saline or M6 viral transport media. 6) Dermal (for enterovirus only): Dacron-tipped swab with plastic handle. Place swab in M6 viral transport media. Clearly label "enterovirus" to ensure proper handling and test setup.
Lymph node tissue, deep seated tissues
Viral isolation and detection depends on the proper collection and transport of the specimen.
Some viruses (eg, cytomegalovirus) take up to 2 weeks to grow in viral cell culture. Molecular tests (ie, real-time PCR) should be used for rapid diagnosis.
