Useful For
​Identification of hemosiderin pigment in a sample to rule out renal disease.
Specimen Requirements

Urine​ ThinPrep​ Sage Container​ 10.0 mL​ 2.0 mL
Collection Processing Instructions
PREFERRED:  Collect urine specimen and fix immediately with 30 mL of Cytolyt or equal volume 50% ethyl alcohol.

ALTERNATE:  Collect a urine specimen for each of three consecutive days (recommended for uroepithelial cancer screening).  Fix immediately after collection with 30 mL of Cytolyt or equal volume 50% ethyl alcohol.

NOTE:  If additional clinical testing (i.e. Urinalysis or Microbiology) is also requested on the same specimen, collect specimen in a sage container without the alcohol fixative (fresh specimen) or aliquot a portion of the total urine collected for Cytology testing and fix aliquoted portion immediately with 30 mL of Cytolyt or equal volume 50% ethyl alcohol.​

Test Information
Indicate specimen source or collection type, pertinent patient history and appropriate ICD-9 code on the electronic order or test requisition form.  Record type of fixative and date and time of fixation on the specimen container.
 
Add the comment "Urine for Hemosiderin" to the electronic order comments section or write on the test requisition form.
 
Note:  For lab collected urine specimens, order "Cytology Random Urine (CYT-RU)" (clinical lab) and "Cytology Non-GYN" (anatomic pathology).
 
Note:  Each specimen submitted will be evaluated and charged separately.​
