ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program shines the spotlight on 40 highly accomplished pathologists, residents and laboratory professionals under age 40 who have made significant contributions to the profession and stand out as the future of laboratory leadership.

Tim Uphoff, Ph.D., section head, and Mary Ellen Nedd, assistant manager, Molecular Pathology Lab, nominated Marti for the honor.

Once nominated, she was one of more than 100 pathologists and laboratory professionals who applied. She submitted a resume and wrote an essay addressing the most rewarding aspect of lab medicine, how they see themselves as a future innovator in health care, or bringing the clinical care team together to work towards a common goal.

“I was blown away when I found out I was selected,” Marti said. “I didn’t think I was far enough in my career and was accomplished enough. I’m only 26 and I thought in another 10 years or so I’d have a better chance.” She joined the Clinic in July 2011.

Marti’s, responsibilities include project management for research and clinical studies as well as developing and validating molecular clinical tests. She is currently involved in developing a next generation sequencing-based cancer panel for Marshfield Labs.

Uphoff said he can rely on Marti to handle any project.

“She exemplifies leadership and professionalism in the Molecular Pathology Section and throughout the Clinic,” Uphoff said. “Despite her youth, Marti’s expertise is relied upon by everyone in the section and is recognized outside the Clinic, as evidenced by her invitations to speak at national and international scientific meetings.

“In my 30 years of academic and clinical experience, I have never encountered any young person with Tara’s combination of intellect, integrity, work ethic and influence over others.”

The 40 honorees will share their pathology and laboratory medicine knowledge with a blog on ASCP’s ONELab website.

Clint Borek, assistant manager and compliance coordinator, Marshfield Center Lab Transfusion Services, was among the initial winners when ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program made its debut in 2014.

“ASCP’s 40 Under Forty program is an opportunity to recognize the next generation of laboratory leaders from around the globe,” said ASCP President William G. Finn, M.D. “By providing support and encouragement to these young professionals, we aim to strengthen our current medical laboratory workforce and foster greatness in the profession during this period of historic change in healthcare delivery. We are very fortunate to have such a talented group of individuals who are advancing their careers and helping shape the future of patient care.”
